2016 Tax Calendar — Important Dates:
January 15
4th quarterly installment of 2015 estimated tax (Form 1040-ES) due for those who do not pay their income tax throughout the year through payroll withholdings, unless 2015 1040 Income tax return is filed with final payment by February 1, 2016.
February 1
Employers must send out W-2 Forms and 1099 Forms to employees and non-employees who provide services.
Annual information returns for most other 1099 payments due (dividends, state and local tax refunds, royalty payments, medical and health care payments, distributions from IRAs, SEPs,etc…)
February 16
If you claimed exemption from income tax withholding on the W-4 Form you gave your employer last year, you must file a new Form W-4 by this date to continue your exemption for another year.
Annual information returns for 1099-B broker and barter exchange transactions due, 1099-S real estate transactions, 1099-misc gross proceeds paid to an attorney.
March 1
Businesses must file paper copies of Form 1099 with the Internal Revenue Service (if filing electronically the due date is March 31st). W-2A copies must be filed with the Social Security Administration (if filing electronically the due date is March 31st).
March 15
Calendar year C Corporations must file “Form 1120” and pay any taxes due. All other C Corporations must file by the 15th day of the 3rd month following the close of their tax year. S Corporations must file Form 1120S and also must provide to each shareholder with a copy of Schedule K-1.
Last day for filing application Form 7004 by C Corporations and S Corporations for an automatic six-month extension to file 2015 income tax return.
Last day for filing Form 2553 to elect to be treated as an S Corporation beginning with tax year 2016.
April 18
Individual income tax returns and self-employment tax returns (Form 1040) due for calendar year 2015 (and decedents who died in 2015), along with any tax, interest, and penalties due.
Partnership income tax returns due (Form 1065) for calendar year 2015.
Last day to contribute to a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or SEP-IRA for the 2015 tax year.
Last day to file an amended return 1040X for calendar year 2012.
Last day for individuals to file application Form 4868 (automatic six month extension to file 2015 tax return. Last day for partnerships to file application (Form 7004) for automatic five month extension to file 2015 tax return.
Estimated tax for the 1st quarter of 2016 due for those who do not pay their income tax throughout the year through withholding.
May 16
Annual Information Return Form 990 for 2015 for calendar year organizations exempt or claiming exemption from tax under Code Section 501 or Code Section 4947(a). Fiscal year organizations must file by the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of the taxable year.
Exempt organizations requesting an extension of time may file Form 8868.
June 15
2015 individual income tax returns due for those who live outside the United States.
Estimated tax for the 2nd quarter of 2016 due for those who do not pay their income tax throughout the year through withholding.
September 15
Estimated tax for the 3rd quarter of 2016 due for those who do not pay their income tax throughout the year through withholding.
Businesses tax returns due for those S and C Corporations that were given a 6-month extension to file returns for 2015. Partnership tax returns due for Partnerships that were give a 5-month extension.
October 17
Individual income tax returns due for those who were given a 6-month extension to file income tax returns for 2015, along with any tax, interest, and penalties due.
